About The Rowing Foundation
Our charity was established in 1980 with the aim of "putting young people on the water" and we remain true to this ethos today. We help to fund equipment purchases (boats, blades etc) or boat refurbishments (such as a "hull & tops" service). The items must be for the use of Junior squads at clubs or at university boat clubs.
We do not give grants to individuals. Most of our grants go to UK Rowing Clubs – but we may also support any club or organisation involved in "on water rowing-type" activities. Recent awards have been made to Gig clubs and Scout groups. We do not award grants for canoeing, kayaking, sailing or swimming. The maximum grant which we will award to any club, school or organisation is £4,000 in any five year period. This limit applies as a total across both our equipment grants and refurbishment grants, and can be comprised of a single grant or smaller grants aggregated over the period.
Equipment Grants
Our equipment grants are awarded as a 50% match to the monies spent by the club on the equipment purchased (up to a maximum of £4,000 including VAT). The Deadline for applications for the next round of equipment grant awards is Noon on Monday 2 February 2026
Refurbishment Grants
This scheme is open to any boat belonging to a UK rowing club which is used exclusively for Juniors, those in full-time education or for adaptive rowers of any age. Refurbishment grants are awarded on an ongoing basis so there is no specific deadline for submitting an application.
Support for Adaptive Rowers
In recent years, we have broadened the scope of our original charitable trust and now also offer grants to further adaptive rowing at clubs. We can provide grants to help UK clubs and organisations purchase equipment to assist their Adaptive Rowing programmes, and to encourage Adaptive Rowers of all ages. We are keen to hear from any organisation to see if a grant might help to get more people with any type of disability out on to the water.
