About Lloyd Cowan Athletics Bursary

Lloyd Cowan was an international athlete before hanging up his spikes to become one of the UK's most successful coaches. He guided many leading British sprinters, including World, Olympic and Commonwealth 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu; European and Commonwealth 110m hurdles champion Andy Turner; and his son Dwayne Cowan, who was part of the GB & NI bronze medal-winning 4x400m quartet at the 2017 World Championships. Tragically, Lloyd died in January 2021, aged 58, due to complications from COVID-19. The Lloyd Cowan Bursary continues Lloyd's work to advance athletics. The Bursary awards grants annually to qualified coaches and unfunded athletes aged 16-23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities in the sport.

Coach Bursary: Lloyd Cowan Bursary is a charitable fund administered by a selection panel, which awards grants, and access to kit, of up to £500 to coaches to enable them to participate in athletics. Applications are invited from licensed UK-based athletics coaches, working with athletes eligible to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities.

Athlete Bursary: Our bursary expands options and access for unfunded young athletes to kit, training, competition and travel opportunities, transport and medical care.
