About Halifax Sport Karate

Halifax Sport Karate was established in 2005 by Chief Instructor Matthew Handley. Halifax Sport Karate teaches Karate to all ages and abilities from absolute beginners to the most advanced Karateka.

Halifax Sport Karate is a local karate club located in Halifax West Yorkshire which was established in 2005 by Matthew Handley a 3rd degree black belt in Karate and a qualified EKF Karate coach.

The club started with around 10 students and began in a local school in Sowerby Bridge, the club grew and grew to the point where we all pushed hard to get our own place in 2009. We took a risk and rented a space that we could call home. We worked hard to make this possible, taking around 5 months. We moved our club into a new facilities at the beginning of 2009 and from this point the club started to grow reaching to around 100 students.

In late 2009 the club was used by the junior England Karate team and its coaches to host their pre-training to help them on the journey to the Junior World Championships 2009. The club is now home to over 150 students many of whom compete regularly travelling up and down the country to compete in karate events put on around the UK.

Since the clubs opening we have produced many international British & English National Champions. It has also held awards from students within community for sport disabled person of the year in 2011, 2x junior female sports person of the year 2011 & 2013 and also coach of the year 2013 at the Calderdale sports awards.

The club has also been shortlisted at the Calderdale Sport Awards in 2011, 2012 , 2013 , 2014 for junior sports club of the year.

We are a family run karate club that practices the art form of Bushido Ryu which was founded in Halifax in 1982 we strive to teach self defence, respect, etiquette, confidence, loyalty to ones parents and teacher, self-control fitness and other important life skills.

The club caters for all ages and abilities we provide fun and active karate classes and we also provide the opportunity for students to develop themselves in the area of competition hopefully one day becoming part of the England National Karate Team.
