They are many styles of salsa dancing including: Cali-Style Salsa, Cuban-style salsa, Miami-style Casino, Rueda de Casino, L.A. style and New York salsa. In many styles of salsa dancing, as a dancer shifts their weight by stepping, the upper body remains level and nearly unaffected by the weight changes. Weight shifts cause the hips to move.

Facts

Salsa originated in the 1920's in Eastern Cuba. While salsa music had been popular since the 1910s, the dance didn't come about until the 1920s. In the 1970s, salsa dancing got a big boost in popularity from Cuban & Puerto Rican musicians in New York, where it spread to the rest of the US.
