An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of this new exciting project delivering sport to people with learning disabilities across the city. We are seeking support in delivery of the sports clubs and our future academy. The role is to support the coaches in the delivery of the activities, helping the participants to achieve their own personal goals and supporting them to improve their general health and wellbeing.

Job Title: Leeds Stars Sports Volunteer
Hours: Minimum of 2 hours per week, weekdays, weekends, evenings and bank holidays.
Responsible to: Sports Development Officer

People In Action - are a charity supporting people with learning disabilities in the community. Our aim is to empower people to fulfil their potential and lead safer, healthier and better connected lives, through providing a high quality and reliable support service. We have been established since 1983 and are a leading provider of learning disability services.
Leeds Stars Sports Project – is a project that is ran by People In Action. The project provides an all year round, all ability, sports program of both a recreational and competitive nature across Leeds for athletes with learning disabilities with pathways to the Special Olympics and regional and national competitions.
The projects aim is to improve the health, wellbeing and fitness of people with learning disabilities across Leeds by providing opportunities to participate in regular, organised sports activities, with pathways to the Special Olympics.
The Leeds Stars Sports project provides weekly coaching sessions in athletics, football, swimming, boccia and bowls, which is run across the city.
Leeds Stars Sports Academy (New for 2019) – Leeds Stars Sports Academy is a new exciting opportunity for people with a learning disability to come and taste a variety of different sports in 6 week blocks, delivered across the year.
Leeds Stars Volunteers Role – An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of this new exciting project delivering sport to people with learning disabilities across the city. We are seeking support in delivery of the sports clubs and our future academy.
The role is to support the coaches in the delivery of the activities, helping the participants to achieve their own personal goals and supporting them to improve their general health and wellbeing.
General Duties and Tasks
- Support athletes to access and engage in the sporting activities
- Providing encouragement, guidance and support to our athletes
- Support individuals or small groups to participate in activities
- Support coaches in the delivery of the session
- Support coaches in setting up and clearing away activities
- Make sure members are safe
- Liaise with families and carers as appropriate
- Be an approachable, friendly person with an enthusiasm for providing a fun service
- Attend team meetings
- Complete and attend training as necessary
Skills and Experience
Experience is needed in supporting and delivering sporting activities (a coaching qualification would be ideal but not necessary), as well as having the enthusiasm and a willingness to work as part of a team.
Whilst volunteering for us you can develop and gain the following skills to improve your job prospects:
- Working with adults with additional needs and disabilities
- An understanding of learning disabilities and difficulties
- Develop life skills such as communication, time management, interpersonal and organisational skills
- Opportunity to work in a team
- Training opportunities
- Potential access to funding coaching qualifications
- Group and Coaching skills
NB: this role description may be reviewed annually to meet the requirements of the service.
Please note it is a requirement that all Volunteers hold a satisfactory DBS due to working directly with vulnerable adults
